🏢 Buildings can be more than energy consumers – they can become energy storage systems!

  • August 4, 2026

After three years of international collaboration, Task 43 – “Storage for renewables and flexibility through standardized use of building mass” has published its final report.

The work shows how the thermal mass of buildings – including activated ceilings, walls and façades – can be used to store heating and cooling, increase the use of renewable energy, reduce peak loads, and provide flexibility to electricity and heat networks. The report covers the full range from materials and construction to system integration, control strategies, digital interfaces, business models, regulation and standardisation. It also includes 25 demonstrator factsheets highlighting practical applications.
